New 74 Westy owner!

Postby D3nt » Wed Jul 20, 2016 8:21 pm

Hi everyone! I'm happy to say I am the new owner of a 74 bus! The bus runs really well and is relatively rust free with no rust threatening anything structural. I've got a slight wobble in the rear wheels but rarely hear anything that sounds like stress on the wheel bearings. Where do you guys suggest I order parts and what is the "can't leave the house without" parts list? Thanks!

Congrats on the new bus. Please post some pics so we can all oogle at it. I have had great luck with getting parts from jbugs, airheads, air-cooled, and a few others that I can't remember off hand. Owning a VW is like being in a brotherhood and most VW parts suppliers are (or should be) devoted to that.
Don't leave home without:
A decent tool set, KROIL penetrating lubricant, and a fire extinguisher.
The list can get pretty damn big after those three items. I myself try to carry most of the 'engine trim' (fuel pump, belts, plugs, plug wires, coil, etc.) as you start to do your regular maintenance on your bus the spare parts list will fall into place. Actually...once you break down then the spare parts list falls into place :D
Hope to see some pics of your bus soon.

I meant to post pictures earlier but I headed to VA for a few weeks and I've been spending all of the rest of my time back here getting the bus on the road! I replaced the rear wheel bearings and repacked the CVs and the wobble is gone! I've never dealt with air cooled engines before but I think I have it running pretty decent after performing the regular tune up items.

And my only interior picture. The wife is learning to drive and I'm relaxing!

Awesome ride! Love the carpet and headliner. I'm not the bus guru but looks to be a riviera? (top pops straight up) I've always wanted one. Glad to hear your wobble free without any major parts replacements, and the body looks like it's in great shape. Glad to see another bay on the road, nice job.

Thanks Splitfever! It doesn't pop straight up but I do love that look. So far no major parts, just tune up stuff, a new timing scale and a filler neck seal to keep the gas from dumping out of the side! So far we've camped twice and can't wait for the long weekend to go again!
